Distribution Transformer

Distribution Transformer is used in the electric power distribution network to step down the voltage to the service voltage required by the consumer. The voltage from the substation typically ranges between 4,000 and 36,000 volts which is too high for users such as residences, businesses and small industries. This necessitates the use of a distribution transformer which has typical ratings of 11 KV, 6.6 KV, 3.3 KV, 440 V and 230 V.

Distribution transformers can be categorized on the following basis

Mounting Type - Pole Mount Transformer, Pad Mount Transformer & Underground Transformer

Type of insulation - Liquid immersed, Dry type

Phase - Single Phase or Three Phase

Oil is used in the transformer for cooling, insulation of the windings and protection from moisture. The transformer is smaller in size, easy to install, has low magnetic losses and is not fully loaded. They are designed for maximum efficiency of 60 to 70%.
