Maintenance of Transformer

There are mainly two types of transformer maintenance.  One is done on a regular basis and the other is done at the time of urgency. If maintenance checkups are done on a routine basis then you may not have to undergo breakdown maintenance and hence save downtime.

Some of the maintenance tips of transformers on a daily basis

The most frequently done inspection is checking the exterior condition and cooling system. A simple visual inspection is enough to check this.
Check the oil levels of MOG of main tank and conservator tank
Changing the silica gel whenever color changes to pink
Inspecting leakages and sealing it

Monthly Basis

Oil level  in the oil cap
Ensuring cleaner silica gel breather
Secondary terminals are also checked properly for oil leakage.
If the transformer has oil-filled bushing, ensure the oil is filled to the desired level.
Insulation resistance - Testing of winding

Half Yearly Basis

The porcelain insulator housing to be cleaned
Checking contacts, controls and interlocks
Examine cooler fans, bearings, control mechanism

Yearly Basis

Spark gas assembly should be checked
Check for sludge - Transformer oil
