Cast resin transformer
Cast resin transformers encase the primary and secondary windings in epoxy resin, thereby preventing moisture from penetrating into the windings. They are durable and can withstand pollution, humidity and wide temperature variations making them useful in adverse weather conditions. The epoxy resin protects the windings from dust and corrosion as well. Cast resin transformers are dry and do not require cooling oil and hence do not require fire-proofing for indoor installations. The transformer case is ventilated allowing air to flow in and cool the coils. These transformers.

Cast resin transformers do not have any moving parts and are cooled by air making it environmentally friendly. The absence of cooling oil also lessens pollution by contamination of groundwater due to oil leakage. The lack of periodic checks of oil levels and inspection for possible leaks make it maintenance free. The insulation of the transformers contains a mixture of epoxy resin and quartz powder making it fireproof or self-extinguishable, even during external fires. This feature also enables the transformers to be placed close to the load center, thereby lowering the cable losses and subsequently the cost.
Cast resin transformers have a service life of over 20 years and a low failure rate. They are compact by design and require less space. The construction and installation cost for the sub-station can be greatly reduced by adopting cast resin transformers.
