Transformer Windings
Winding is an
integral part of transformer construction. It should be strong mechanically and
electrically to withstand the high voltages under short surges. They are main
carrying conductors coiled around laminated sections of the core. Copper or
aluminium wires are mainly used as transformer windings. Aluminium is lighter
and cheaper than copper, but copper conductivity is more. Large cross-sectional area of aluminium is
required to carry same amount of current as of copper. Aluminium is preferred
for large scale applications.
There are different
types of transformer windings depending on shape of coil. Some of the major
types of windings are
- Distributed Cross-over windings
- Spiral winding
- Helical winding
- Continuous Disc winding
- Transposition
- Interleaved Disc winding
- Shielded Layer winding
